Deja Vu

Déjà vu

September 2, 2012

Been there, done that and am doing it again, right now. Or have I?

You can call it déjà vu if you’d like, I call it old age. I call it, CSR. (Can’t Remember Shit) Using all my available brain cells, both of them, I think back and try to recall when or how or with whom I may have done this or that before, nothing. I mean, nothing comes to the forefront of my mind where I might access it.

Oh, I can access all sorts of useless crap that I’ll never need to know again. Things I never want to relive come running out of all the creases where memories hide or get lost. Faces I want to recall and names that match those faces, slim to elzero chance of regurgitating that info. The history test my friend copied in 11th grade? Oh, yeah, I remember that clearly. I remember being scared witless that we would be caught and probably expelled or shot or whatever happens to cheaters, who never win, by the way. But no one caught us and I then understood that my history teacher was NOT actually reading the answers, just looking at his cheat sheet and marking something on the tests.

Did I just digress? It would appear so, though I so often do that when I’m trying to remember something that I can’t’ be sure.  Oh, déjà vu! That has happened a gazilliontrillion times, so it must be déjà vu or again, just getting old and forgetting.

Useless crap that I recall:
My first phone number as an adult…266-?  Ummm well….okay, not that.
My address in 1970...10487 Grand Blanc RoadGaines, MI  (YAY)
My parents phone number before I moved out and they moved away…they really didn’t want me to move home again….271-8328. circa 1971, I think.
My first EVER friend...(not related) Barbara Niener
My first friend when we moved to Gaines…Marlene Weber (Brown, now)
Every car I have ever owned. 3 Corvairs (red, white and brown), Chevelle (blue), Ford Wagon (pea green), Pontiac Ventura (red), Monza (yellow), Vw (red), Lincoln Continental (darkest blue), Olds 98 (darkest green), Buick LeSabre (Old lady beige), Dodge Laser (white), Buick LeSabre (maroon), Cutlass Convertible (white), Baretta (marine blue), Conversion Van, GMC (two tone tan), Olds Silhouette Van (silver).
There are lots of other useless things in there, no one will ever ask, nor care if I volunteer, as is evidenced right here, to know, yet I am using valuable and needed brain storage space with this crap.  Okay, Marlene is not crap, not at all, but she knows she was my first friend in Gaines and neither of us has ever been asked that question, I’m sure.

What were we talking about?  Oh…I looked ^^^^up there…déjà vu .  Yes, I don’t know if I have experienced that or not really.

A few times in my life I have felt like possibly something about a place or a person is much too familiar to be new to me. I have believed it could have been a faint memory from a previous life or just a moment in time that I may be reliving for some reason, but yeah, no, for me, it’s always turned out to be just someone or someplace that I forgot that I really did know or have actually been...and it was lost in one of those creases. Yeah, I’m not so much an expert on déjà vu.

Yeah, I’m not so much an expert on déjà vu…

OH   EM GEE!  I think I just experienced déjà vu!  No for reals!  I did, I thought I had already typed “Yeah, I’m not so much an expert on déjà vu and why would I do that any other time, since I’ve never done anything on déjà vu before. EVER. I don’t think,

That’s me, reliving my life one day at a time, because I have no idea what happened yesterday, but I do know what I was driving!.

  1. Jo, I have the same issue. The worst? When I tell someone something and realize from the look on his/her face that I've told it before? So embarrassing.

    1. But we get to experience NEW things over and over for the very first time! And hide our own Easter eggs!

  2. You crack me up! I agree with both you and Helene, telling the same story/idea/thought over again and then realizing...yikes! Isn't getting older just the best....

  3. Holy cow, you know a lot of useless stuff! So funny!!

My brain has gone on strike. I have to think to remember when my kids were born. I truly FORGOT my cell phone number and couldn't find out how to look it up on the stupid thing. (The doctor I was trying to give it to looked at me like I was a lost cause, but note that she didn't help). I forget my age. I never remember the day of the week. Ever.

I'd love to say I have all the useless facts in my head crowding them, but I don't. Maybe all the crickets have pushed my senses out--you can hear them, right?

    1. I can totally hear them! And your being bombarded with very useful facts from Chatty Charlie. So your brain can only take and retain so much. You're doin just fine!

  4. The worst for me Jo is running into guys in the shipyard who obviously know me from other jobs, or other seasons and I can not remember their name or the place I am supposed to know them from! I worked with a guy in one department last winter and we talked extensively about US history etc. When I saw him when I went back this spring...nothing! I could not remember his name for a gallon of gas! I chose to wait till it came back to me. So every morning I saw him and said "Hey Bud!", or "Good morning Bub!" and waited. One day he got up from lunch and went down the stairs. I saw a piece of paper at his place and looked at the top of a note that I HOPED was written TO him. The next day I cringingly tested my new intelligence with a "Hey Rich"! He said, "Hi Mike" and my burden was gone! (Darn, I should have made a whole blog post out of this comment!)

    1. That has so happened to me, as well. Customers I probably saw once a month for years will see me now and start talking about their kids or whatever, I smile a lot and nod my head and then go home and try to figure out who the heck...well, you know.

      *sigh*

    1. That was one of my least favorite cars, now, I wish I had it back. I loved my Monza and seriously wished I had kept it. Also loved the Laser and the Cutlass convertible and of course, the Baretta. Of all these cars...those were the best!

  7. I had a gold chevelle once. I believe we just have so much information crowded in our heads that it can't get out at the right time. At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it! LOL!

  11. Yes, wow! It's not old age, it's good memories come back around to remind you of a story you might like to write. I am always amazed by memory, how it comes and goes, and how somethings we remember perfectly, while other things we don't. It's fleeting and then again.. is it? Thanks for the smile, Jo. You've a way with words.

  12. Thanks Brenda...I don't know about the memories all being good ones, but even the bad ones are good to remember.

  13. Of all the things I've had and lost, I miss my mind the most.

It really bites that I waited until my memory was failing to become a writer. When my children were younger, we had a book called, "12,000 words everyone should know" At dinnertime my children would quiz me on the words and were astonished that I seemed to know every one. Now,I'm lucky if I remember my own name.

But I can remember that orange skirt I was wearing on that day in the 4th grade. Or that a boy named Sidney and I shared the same birthday in elementary school. Stuff that doesn't matter and no one will ever ask about.

It really is a shame, isn't it?

    1. I think it's weird! Most of the things I remember in detail are things I really don't care about one way or the other, I just can't seem to forget them. Now, the important things, some are clear and some are just big blurs. I don't know how or why that is, but it surely IS.

  14. I feel my mind already slipping away. Way too much information. It is weird the stuff we remember and the stuff our brains lose as we age. I may not remember the name of the person I just met but I know exactly what my first car was. Just weird. Cool post Jo!

    1. Thanks Kathy...I think it's universal and so I have to wonder if it's more nature than nurture. I also think sometimes it's things that have changed our lives that we hold onto, but not always! So I wonder, why? Why is that?

  15. I hate that CRS curse!
Why is it I can remember things that happened years ago, sometimes in acute detail, but can't remember where I was two days ago?

    1. Dementia starts at an early age. I'm learning a lot about my childhood as I grow older, I actually remember things when I see a picture now, has not always been that way. Years ago I would look at the old pics and try to figure out if that is ME or someone else. Now I know it's me and what I was doing when the pic was taken. Now high school, not so much. I seem to have blurred a ton of memories my friends can recall at will, they say I was there, but I have no recollection of a lot of details. Nuts, just nuts.

  17. I remember lots of old phone numbers--the one from my childhood home, my childhood best friend's, crazy stuff. Now numbers that people have gotten in the last few years? Not a clue. They go into my phone and I never hand dial them again, so they never lock into memory. I lose the phone, I'm screwed.

I do sometimes have a feeling of having been somewhere before, though I'm pretty sure it's my first visit. That's always a little weird, but kinda cool.

    1. I used to have deja vu moments, but not in recent years. Perhaps I am living longer than the last time. Don't know.

I say all the time, my life is in that phone, where is it? Scary to think of losing it.

  19. One of the mysteries of the mind - the ability to remember crap and filter out what matters. I can still remember my phone number from my childhood but my current work number ... er... blank.

    1. Phones with memory are to blame! We don't HAVE to remember. Albert Einstein said, "I don't remember anything I can look up. It's a waste of precious memory."

Good enough for him, good enough for me!

  20. Well...I just learned yesterday that I might have Nominal Aphasia which is a form of aphasia in which the subject has difficulty remembering names that the subject should know well. No... A doctor did not tell me that. I diagnosed myself... ROFL But seriously, there are times that I can look at an apple and can't for the life of me drag the word from my mind to my lips. It's scary sometimes. Thank God it isn't every day.

Deja Vu.... Yes! I have experienced Deja Vu many, MANY times in my life. It is weird at first, but it no longer weirds me out....
