DANCING

I imagine everyone who knows me expects this one to be about Dancing With the People You May Have Heard of Once or as more commonly known, Dancing With the Stars. They would be wrong. I do enough talking about that every Monday and Tuesday night.  This will be about dancing.

Is there a better full body workout than dancing?

I mean all out, full blown, gettin' down with yer jiggy self, legs up and down, arms up and moving, hips gyrating dancing.  The kind where your heart pounds, your legs ache, your arms nearly throb and your feet are begging you to sit your butt down for 10 minutes.  That kind of dancing.  Every major muscle is used and abused. The best part?  It's fun and will make you laugh while you work away your caloric intake and build muscle tone.

Core strength is vital to aging bodies maintaining the ability to stand tall, lift moderately heavy objects and stay healthy as well as mobile. As the human body ages, it loses strength quickly and without some kind of workout regime, it soon loses it's ability to do the simplest things in day to day life. The easiest and most beneficial exercise is walking. Once walking is relatively effortless, a little light dancing is the next step. When the dancing is easier and can be done longer, adding a few more moves until that all out dance is just 10 minutes a day and as routine as your morning coffee, coke, milk, tea or whatever you might like to start your morning.  It will become addictive.

That is the key. Movement every day and routine. In thirty days whatever you are making yourself do will become routine. So why not give a month to dance?  Give a dance for good body tone and good core strength.

I think I have talked myself into this one. Dang, I'm good at this!

    2. You sure got me as well. I started walking in the house. Florida is too hot this time of the year to walk outdoors. I am going to walk the entire interior, wall to wall twice. Then when I stop huffing and puffing I will walk three times. Lets all do it and see who loses weight or if we even lose a lb.

      Anyone game?

    3. Good! I am dancing every morning! Lookin' pretty silly, but feeling pretty good about it. I don't care about losing weight, I need to tone up my flab. I'm not overweight, I'm just out of shape and losing too much strength.
      Welcome back. :)

    1. Yep and that is the thing with using dance for exercise, you don't have to get wild, just keep moving and working your 'thang'.

  7. I used to love dancing but sadly arthritis has put a stop to that - except in the water, where I can jiggle to my heart's content during my aquarobics class!

    1. You can still dance. Just a little less enthusiastically! Water aerobics are fun. I do them all summer. ♥

  12. I have two left feet when it comes to dancing, but I love walking, even a quick 20 minute jaunt around the block can clear the mind. Dancing and me, too scary to think about.

  13. Sometimes I dance while cooking dinner, as long as no one's watching, but that's a crazy as I get. You are good at the convincing thing, though, so maybe I'll think about the jiggy-thing. When you use a word like that, how can you NOT think about it?

Do you have to have music in the background? I do. Or I have to sing, in which case I make sure no one's within seeing or hearing distance :)

    1. I do like to have music, but the music in my head works too! LOL

I don't really ever sing, that would take coordination. Sing + dance = accidental breakage of something!

  15. The song "Dancing Machine" went through my head before the first paragraph was finished. I just cannot help myself. By Joe, I think you have convince me too. I am always happy when I am dancing! WhOoOoOOOOhOoOot thanks Jo, that was better than morning coffee!

    1. Wait, it's night time, can I rethink that coffee bit? ;-)

    2. Yep, you may take back the coffee thing, cuz nothing beats morning coffee! :)

A 10 minute morning dance is fun, though AFTER the coffee. I'm loving it and I do think it starts me off on a good foot ~ so to speak! ♥

Maybe one of those angels could post up a video of Mommy doing any one of those? That would be fun.

  18. I suck at dancing. I think if someone actually sat there and watched me I'd look like a seizure victim or a spaztic freak. Iuno LOL I mean, I'll do it just not in front of other people :P

    1. I'm not one to go wild in public! But I do sometimes get a little wild here.

I'm pretty sure if the FedEx or UPS guys/gals happen to see in me in mid-dance, they'd immediately call 911!

  19. I like to dance like you wrote about while I'm cleaning. All Alone. When No One Can See Me. And of course,in my mind, I have the figure of the girls in the picture you posted! Next favorite dancing? An impromptu sow dance in thekitchen with my husband while making dinner or filling the dishwasher. Rare, but so nice.

I also look like those girls, in my head. That's a good thing, I think of it as a goal. LOL

I love slow dancing with Roomy anytime he initiates it! There's something very romantic about a man who just feels the need to hold you and move slowly around the floor, no? :)

  21. I think you talked me into it too!!! Funny you should write this because I have been thinking about adding some dance time to my day except the only place I could dance is between my husband and the TV. So, I think I will do it the afternoons he is at the American Legion, which is a couple of hours Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The other days, I must remain satisfied with walking the dogs.

In my youth, I was a dancing fool and you could not pinch an inch on me. Now.... Well... I think I will stop right there. LOL

    2. I CAN!!! LOL I was born with rhythm...I think.

Actually, I have used dance many times in my life to slim down and/or tone up. It is EXCELLENT cardio and more fun than the elliptical...for sure!!! I do walk a lot with my two small dogs, but it is not a brisk walk like I would like because they want to stop and sniff every little thing and then there is Maggie Mae who won't take another step when she decides she is done. Lucky she only weighs 7 pounds because I have had to carry her back home many times... The little scamp...

  24. Hey Jo. Just read your "Dancing" blog and this was inspiring. I think I need to do this a little more. When I am in my office at work and no one is there I go to the music stations on TV and if a song comes on that has a good beat I get up and dance around the office. A good country song and I two step around the conference table. This has inspired me to get my "Dance On" at home more now. The "Footloose" cd has some good cardio songs on it. Thanks for the inspiration to get my groove on!
